I thought I would share with you some of the things that were discussed at the end of the baby massage class last week. One of the mums had taken her baby swimming for the first time and wanted to share the experience with myself and the other mums, here is how it began....
They had gone swimming at the hydro pool in the Eltham Centre and said it was wonderful as it has limited availability so was not crowded. This happens one morning a week. I would recommend this as my daughter started her lessons in a hydro pool, its smaller, less noisy and warmer than a teaching pool. A few of us said that the information from health professionals was confusing as to when you can take your baby swimming. It used to be after their injections but I thought the recent advice was whenever you felt was the best time for your baby obviously for a short time first of all.
Holidays abroad - Holidays abroad are lovely to have as a family and provide us Mums with a real break and sense of shared childcare. It has its worries though and the "sun" was one which we discusssed. Using high factor sun lotions, all in one sun suits and hats, a sun tent and taking the babies inside between 11 and 3pm when it is the hotest time of the day were some of things that came up. Coldwater sterisliing is easier when abroad instead of lugging your steriliser, these tablets can be bought from Boots and all you need is a plastic tub to take with you or use the sink. Also I mentioned a "shade a babe" (UV cover for a pushchair with zip up front) was great for me last summer when my son was four months in Spain. I bought mine in Mothercare. Nappy rash - Some creams work and some just dont, you simply have to try a few to work out which is best for your baby. Kamillosan was good for me when it was really bad and Sudocream at other times. What I used to call "nappy off time" was great about 5.30-6 when they start to get grouchy. I would lay a thick towel down, close the door, put a children's CD on and let him lay there without his nappy on for ages. This got air to his bottom and relieved any soreness he may have. Also found a bath often soothed it too.
These were the main topics discussed, there were other one to one conversations going on and also discussions about other parent groups attended. If you would like to be part of a social group meeting other Mums whilst spending quality time with your baby please do call me to arrange to come along to a baby massage taster class.
Have a good week
